Many companies connect their business networks to the Internet with the hopes of increasing productivity and improving communication.  Unfortunately, what often ends up occurring is employees spend many hours online browsing travel, entertainment, MP3 download, shopping and pornography sites.  Aside from the obvious cost associated from loss of productivity, costly sexual harassment lawsuits from offended employees can cost your company tens of thousands of dollars to defend.   Downloading of personal MP3's, JPEGS and videos consumes your network bandwidth, overloads hard drives, drives up backup costs and increases the possibility of introducing viruses and Trojan horse programs than can destroy data and compromise security.  The same rules apply to inappropriate use of e-mail which hinders the productivity of your company and increases your legal liability.

Fortunately, several software and hardware solutions have been developed that offer filtering and monitoring of both web and e-mail use.  These products are completely configurable by management and allow managers to enforce an acceptable use policy while reducing the need for disciplinary action.

We install and support two different solutions from industry leaders Websense Inc. and Surf Control Inc.  The most appropriate solution depends on your particular network configuration.  Either of these products can be installed for an evaluation period for a nominal installation fee.  Based upon reports that the programs generate you can then decide if the loss of productivity and legal liability warrants the cost of the software.  Most companies find that the software pays for itself within a couple months.
